40. Hsieh / Deliverance
above Chên The Arousing, Thunder
below K'an The Abysmal, Water
The Judgement
Deliverance. The southwest furthers.
If there is no longer anything where one has to go,
Return brings good fortune.
If there is still something where one has to go,
Hastening brings good fortune.
The Image
Thunder and rain set in:
The image of Deliverance.
Thus the superior man pardons mistakes
And forgives misdeeds.
Change in the second place means:
One kills three foxes in the field
And receives a yellow arrow.
Perseverance brings good fortune.
Change in the fourth place means:
Deliver yourself from your great toe.
Then the companion comes,
And him you can trust.
2. K'un / The Receptive
above K'un The Receptive, Earth
below K'un The Receptive, Earth
The Judgement
The Receptive brings about sublime success,
Furthering through the perseverance of a mare.
If the superior man undertakes something and tries to lead,
He goes astray;
But if he follows, he finds guidance.
It is favorable to find friends in the west and south,
To forego friends in the east and north.
Quiet perseverance brings good fortune.
The Image
The earth's condition is receptive devotion.
Thus the superior man who has breadth of character
Carries the outer world.
QUICK INTERPRETATION. Third utterly relevant and remarkable Oracle cast in a row! I asked for a clear cut PREDICTION, and this is precisely what we got. It's unequivocally auspisious for Israel. Given the set-up by the two precedin Oracles, the prediction is a U-turn of policy. ASouthwest means normalcy, and abandoning the direction of adventurism, north-east. (This is the traditionally established interpretation.) Who are the tree foxes to be killed in the field? Let's hope it does not mean stong throwing Palestinians youngsters. It is easy to construct symbolical interpretations. I have to think this over. Delivering oneself of that bigf toe clearly means cutting an aggressiv part of the Israeli body. So, the indication is a very successful Israeli retreat to a moderate and conciliary standpoint. This outcom is counter-intuitive, and certainly NOT what I expected. But this is what the Oracle says, and that's it. - Addendum: Tom Risemans quite valuable interpretation, far more matter-of-fact and ciommon sense than Richard SWilhelms rmantic musing and James Legge's painstaking contortons, speci fy: those foxes means cunning, insincere people, yellow means correctness and that big toe refers to a bad person one must get rid off lest all is lost.
